Out of the Shadows was written by Justina Ireland as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project. Vernestra Rwoh is meditating in a garden on the Starlight Beacon when her Padawan, Imri Cantaros, interrupts her to show off his recently completed new lightsaber. He also tells her there's a comm droid waiting for her outside. The droid, however, is glitching, and Imri asks to be excused because the number of people around is stressing his powerful empathic abilities. As Vernestra waits by herself, she encounters Padawan Reath Silas, who has recently arrived on the space station with his Master, Cohmac Vitus. Reath helps fix the droid, telling her he'll see her later. Vernestra finds herself on a call with her old Master, Stellan Gios, who says he wants her to report to Coruscant, as a Galactic Republic senator wants her help dealing with a situation in the Berenge sector. That said, I do think there are some very strong images in this collection. There are also some biographical details that were not in the film. I feel like some of the still life shots are much less interesting than the street portraits; but there are some really stunning street portraits in this book. Leaving the Alien on board the Marion, the remaining survivors — Hoop, Ripley, Sneddon, Baxter, Kasyanov and Lachance — fly to the surface of LV-178 in the Samson and enter the mine. As they descend into the complex, Ash (who has now infected the Marion's computers) sabotages the elevator and sends them plunging to the very lowest level of the mine, where the miners originally stumbled upon the Xenomorphs. The elevator is smashed beyond repair, and the survivors are forced to trek through the complex to reach a second elevator at the far side. They soon stumble upon a Xenomorph Hive, as well as a massive derelict spacecraft buried underground. With the Xenomorphs pursuing them, they have no choice but to head inside the ship.
